Training on Bird Identification

Training on Bird Identification

Ethiopian Wildlife and Natural History Society (EWNHS) is implementing Migratory Soaring Birds (MSB) tranche II Energy project since December 2019 by engaging key energy sector partners. The major aim of the project being protecting MSBs of the Rift Valley/Red Sea flyway which is a flyway for 37 MSBs.

As part of the project activity, EWNHS has organized a 3rd round, two days Bird Identification training, from 8-9 March 2022 at Azzeman hotel, Addis Ababa. The training was given to Experts working for Ethiopia Electric Power (EEP), Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) head office, Oromia region Electric Utility (Oromia EEU), Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA) attended. The practical session of the training took place around, Koka Lake areas.

The major objective of the training was, to acquaint concepts of bird identification to experts working in energy, biodiversity conservation and environment sectors and mainstreaming conservation considerations of Migratory Soaring Birds (MSBs) and reduce the negative impacts of bird-unfriendly energy infrastructures which cause fatalities of birds as well as reduce power outrages caused by electrocution.

Furthermore, the training believed to strengthen collaboration between stakeholders and partners, and enhance attempts of conservation considerations of birds by experts of EEU and EEP in their routine activities and reducing impacts of bird-unsafe power infrastructures which at the same time believe to benefit the organizations though reducing power supply cut, property damage and maintenance cost of damage for energy infrastructures occurred due to electrocution and collision.

The training was designed to build capacity of partners through providing basic bird identification and Environmental Impact Assessment knowledge, which the trainers will apply in EIA studies and designing of bird-friendly energy infrastructures.

Mr. Mekonnen Biru (MSBs tranche II Energy coordinator) presented the status of MSBs and an overview of MSBs tranche II-Energy project. Dr. Biruktawit Abdu (Ornithologist, Environmentalist) gave the theoretical and practical sessions of the bird of the training.
