2nd Round Awareness Creation Workshop on Migratory Soaring Birds Conservation Consideration in the Energy Sector Carried Out

Ethiopian Wildlife and Natural History society has conducted a workshop on the need of mainstreaming of Migratory Soaring Birds conservation considerations into the energy sector, a sector which is identified as one of the sectors that pose threat to migratory and other birds of Ethiopia. The workshop is part of Migratory Soaring Birds (MSBs) tranche 2 -Energy project activities.  The workshop was conducted on December 7, 2021 at Azzeman Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  

The purpose of the workshop is to enhance awareness of the key staffs of Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU), Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) and Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA). The workshop is expected to have contribution to achieve  MSB’s-Tranche 2 Energy project targets.

In the workshop an opening speech and updates on EWNHS was delivered by Mr. Teferera Arega, EWNHS representative. Mr. Mekonnen Biru, MSBs-Tranche 2-Energy Ethiopian project coordinator, delivered the topics, “Overview of MSBs Tranche 2-Energy Project”, “Challenges that Bird un-friendly energy infrastructures are posing to MSBs in the Rift Valley/Red Sea flyway”, “Accomplished MSBs Tranche 2-Energy Project activities”, as well as “Summarized report of assessment of Dangerous Energy Infrastructures impacts on MSBs and other Birds conducted in parts of Eastern and Central Rift valley of Ethiopia”.

In addition, Mr. Solomon Mengistu delivered lectures on ‘” Overview of Egyptian vulture Newlife project “and “Diversity and Challenges that Egyptian Vultures and other vultures of Ethiopia facing”. The workshop helped the participants to understand impacts of bird-unfriendly Energy infrastructures posing to MSBs and other birds in Ethiopia. Besides, the workshop enabled the participants to realize the urgency of tackling birds’ fatality happening due to bird unsafe energy infrastructures. Each presentation were followed by some questions and more discussion.

The workshop was attended by directors and experts of Environment, Health and Standard, Engendering, quality and Research, Transmission-substation construction, Research, planning and Communication directorates of EEU, EEP, EWCA.

Awareness workshop to key decision makers at the energy sector is Paramount.
